Alpha Scholars of Distinction Club 

(A K-3 Beta Club Initiative)

The Alpha Scholars of Distinction Club was formed to recognize K, 1, 2nd, and 3rd-grade students who consistently reach academic benchmarks sooner than their peers and who, at this time in their cognitive and academic development, need educational experiences which go beyond those normally offered in primary classrooms. Students are selected at the end of the Beginning Of Year assessment (BOY). These students exhibit exceptionality before yearly instruction begins, which could indicate gifted characteristics. The Alpha Club will follow the same tenants as the National Junior Beta Club.  Inductions will be held on the same evening as Beta Club inductions. 

The criteria for the Alpha Club are…

*K-2 students who are well above(blue) in mClass at BOY. 

*Third-grade students who are well above (blue) in mClass at BOY. 

*Third-grade students who obtain a 90% average in reading and/or math at G1. 

*Students with no office referrals who exhibit worthy, moral, and ethical character with commendable attitudes.

Though the students are not formally identified as gifted or ready for the Junior Beta Club, the Alpha Program recognizes and nurtures young children who demonstrate the potential for 

Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AI) programs and who may progress toward academic recognition, such as the Junior Beta Club.


Alpha Discovery Goals: 

  • To recognize and nurture the academic gifts of young students from all cultural groups and across all economic areas who have the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment.

  • To provide challenging instructional activities in math, reading, writing, problem-solving, and critical/creative thinking to students who demonstrate gifted potential.

Alpha Discovery Activities nurtures our students through the following:

  •  Independent study on topics of interest to the student

  • Creative problem-solving exercises

  • Accelerated math assignments

  • Accelerated reading, writing assignment

  • Critical/creative thinking skill-building activities

These students will be examined and re-examined, watching carefully for the manifestation of gifted behaviors and the students’ need for differentiated instruction.  Regardless of minority, ESL, economically disadvantaged, and culturally different students.
